WHITES 1853 Leeds Directory1 states:

HORSFORTH, on the northern acclivities of Airedale, 5 miles N. W.
of Leeds, is a large salubrious village, township, and chapelry, con
taining about 4000 inhabitants, and 2820 acres of land. The Leeds
Northern Railway traverses the eastern side of the township, and has a station near Carr Bridge. Here are excellent quarries of sandstone, and an iron bridqe, erected across the Aire in 1819, at the cost of £1500, by J. Pollard, Esq. Horsforth Church was rebuilt in 1758, and is a perpetual curacy valued at £158, in tile gift of J. S. Stanhope, Esq. Woodside Church (St. James) was built in 1847, at the cost of £2200, and is a perpetual curacy valued at £150, in
the alternate patronage of the Crown and the Bishop of Ripon. A par
sonage house and school have also been erected. The Baptists, and the Wesleyan, N. C., and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. Gas works were established here, in 1853, and a Mechanics' Institution in 1850.
