WHITES 1853 Leeds Directory states:

CARLTON, a small village and township 2 miles S. of Otley, has
about 200 souls, and 1270 acres. Here is an Incorporated Workhouse, built in 1818, for 40 townships united under Gilbert's Act for the support of their in-door poor. These 40 townships form Otley Superintendent Registrar's District. Mr. C. J. Walker, of Otley, is the clerk. Atkinson John, governor, Workhouse Holmes Jeremiah, vict. Black Horse Tuke Wm. land surveyor, &c.
