Aims of the Leeds Index

Who are the Leeds Indexers?
The 'Leeds Indexers' were formed in August 2000 by a group of Family Historians who were actively researching in the Leeds area. Living in Leeds they were aware of its vast size and the problems in locating records. Some of the indexers were already actively indexing self generated projects and the obvious course of action would be to make the details available to others. We are not a Society or Family History Group just a group of individuals wishing to make information available to fellow researchers.
What do we do?

The main aims of the LI is to provide an easy source of reference for researchers studing information in the Leeds area. It is difficult to locate records in a City of such a large size. Areas are not always known to researchers; Churches have similar / sometimes the same name; some of the records have been indexed, some have not. Records can be located in Public Libraries, Archives, Private collections and sometimes with private individuals. The aim of the LI is to try and establish a directory of information available and localities the information can be viewed. The LI are also actively indexing records that will be useful to both Family and Local Historians. Because the Site and Organisation are relatively new, a great deal of work and research still needs to be gathered for this site to function correctly.

Please bear with us. The Site is in its infancy and there is a great deal of information to add.

Can you Assist?

Do you know

  • of any records, relating to Leeds, that do not appear on this site that would be useful to others?
  • of any 'Indexes' that we have not listed?
  • of the current location of any records relating to Leeds that we have not listed?
  • any useful URL (Web Links) to sites that may be of interest?

Have you

  • Prepared an 'Index' of any records for the Leeds area (whether freely available or otherwise)?
  • Taken part in the recording of information relating to Leeds and know where the information is stored?
  • Found any useful information relating to Leeds that you think may benefit fellow researchers?

If you can answer yes to any of the questions then please drop us a line .
