The following Description from the '1893 Kelly's Directory of Leeds, Sheffield and Rotherham' 1: St. Philip's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed by Orders in Council, September 19th and 26th and October 7th, 1845, out of St. Peter's and St. George's. The church, in Wellington street, erected in 1846-7 at a cost of £5,000 on a site given by Messrs. GOTT, is a building in the Geometrical Decorated style, from designs by R. D. CHANTRELL esq. Architect, consisting of chancel, clerestoried name of 5 bays, aisles and a tower on the south side with an open parapet, and buttresses rising into the crocketed pinnacles at the angles, and an octagonal ribbed spire relieved by two tiers of spire lights; the tower contains 3 bells, a small bell, and a clock, and its lower stage forms a porch; the chancel and nave have hammer beams roofs, and there is an arcaded reredos decorated in gold and colour, and carved choir stalls of stained pine: the organ was erected about 1879: at the west end is a projected vestry, inclosed by a traceried screen; there are about 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value, from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, £200, with residence, in a gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Ripon alternately, and held since 1884 by the Rev. James Alfred PINK. The population in 1891 was 2,800.
