Architect & Building:
The following Description from the 1893 Kelly's Directory of Leeds, Sheffield and Rotherham (1): St. James', York Street, is a proprietary church, originally erected as a chapel in connection with Lady Huntingdon's Society, but was purchased by the Rev. John KING M.A. and Consecrated in September, 1801, under a special Act of Parliament by the Archbishop of York: it is an elongated octagonal structure of brick, with semi-circular transepts, finished with a stone cornice, supported by columns at the front angles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a western portico; the interior is surrounded by galleries, and there are about 1,000 sittings. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the gift of the vicar of Leeds, and held since 1892 by the Rev. David Callie ALLISON, of Trinity Coll. Dublin.
