Records Inscriptions and Plans

HOME > Leeds & District Burials

Welcome to the Leeds & district burials project page. Here you can find out details of the project and check out its progress. This is a multi-Society project and anyone can join in.

The project has been launched to assist persons researching records in the Leeds area. Full details of the projects aims can be found on the Aims page. We would like to hear from anyone who can assist in the project.

This is not just an index it will be a very useful tool that we've all yearned for.

Contents:

What information will be included on the CD.

The CD will contain information relating to any records that appertain to burials /cremations. The main three categories are listed below. It is hope, where ever possible to include a Master Names Index to assist researchers.

1. Burial Registers & Records

These will cover not only the burial registers, but any indexes or records appertaining to burials / cremations.

Burial / Cremation records come in a variety of formats. It is hoped to include as much information as possible or that is available. These records could be a full transcripts or name index. The may have been taken from registers, Grave Books, newspapers etc. We are willing to include any relevant information. It is hoped that this information can be included in the master index.

2. Monumental Inscriptions

A large number of Monumental Inscriptions have been transcribed by various Societies / Groups. A large number of these have never been published.

There are a large number of Monumental Inscriptions that are held by various groups / individuals. The aim is to consolidate these into a single publication. This will assist researchers enormously. Monumental Inscriptions have been transcribed in a variety of formats. But where ever possible it is hoped a index can be generated to assisting in searching these types of records.

3. Plans & Maps

These will include grave plans showing sections and grave plots. It will also include any Ordnance Survey Map (subject to copyright).

Another useful source are the grave maps. it assists in locating graves. The plans / maps will be in a variety of formats.

  • A large proportion of Cemetery / Graveyards will have a plan of the area. it is hoped where ever possible to include these.
  • Ordnance Survey maps - These can assist in the layout of a cemetery. Especially when the site has been redeveloped.
  • Hand Drawn plans. These have often been prepared by persons recording the Monumental Inscriptions to be used as a finding aide.

What format will the CD be.

All the information on the CD will be in the popular Adobe Acrobat - portable Document Format (PDF). A viewer program will be included on the CD. This format has been chosen because it is compatible with both PC and Mac computers.

The data will include:

  • Details of individuals / Groups / Societies taking part. This will also included contact details if they wish to supply them.
  • An overview of the area covered.
  • A Master Name index.
  • Place Index.
  • Brief history of cemetery / Graveyard if supplied.
  • Burial Register - Transcripts & Indexes.
  • Grave Books - Transcripts & Indexes.
  • Monumental Inscriptions - Transcripts & Indexes.
  • Books of Remeberance - Transcripts & Indexes.
  • Grave Plans.
  • Ordnance Survey Maps.

As you can appreciate the information will be vast. It is an ongoing project but I'm sure you'll agree a worthwhile one.

Can you assist.

Please contact us.
