Issue one is now available. Click here for details

Welcome to the most ambitious project yet.

Listed below are details of the project. We welcome feedback from anyone able to assist. Please keep an eye on the Progress of the Project.

Background.
There is a wealth of information in relation to burials in the Leeds area, the majority of which is held in the public domain, but a vast amount of information is also maintained in private collections. The information is contained in a variety of formats, covers various records including Burial Records, Grave Books and Monumental Inscriptions. The amount of hours involved in recording all these records is beyond comprehension. Many Societies/Groups record and publish records. They also provide transcripts to the National Burial Index, but these records are limited to purely an index.People-researching ancestors in Leeds have great difficulty in locating records due to the shear size of the city, the large number of possible locations of records and also the many possible places of burial. Other problems include Churches no longer existing or Churches bearing the same name, movement of people within the city and the loss of records either by degradation or mishandling. The Leeds Indexers are currently holding over quarter of a million burial records, which will become the starting point for this project.

Aim of the Project

In an effort to assist researchers we propose to create a central source for burial records for the Leeds and surrounding area. We propose to produce a master burial index on CD Rom in the popular Adobe "PDF" format (making it compatible with PC's and Macintosh Computers). All other records can appear in a similar format including Grave Books, Burial Records, Monumental Inscriptions and Plans. There will be continual additions and amendments to the information so a new CD Rom will be produced on an annual or biannual basis. It is intended to involve local Institutions, Societies and individuals in this project, to offset costs and to provide the necessary input to progress this enormous undertaking.

Costs
Only Institutions, Societies/Groups supplying information for the project, (and therefore 'registered' with Leeds Indexers), will be eligible to sell the Leeds Burials CD. The cost of producing the CD is estimated to be £2.50 and this is the price that will be charged to the Society/Group. The R.R.P. of the CD will be £10 this will allow the Society/Group to make a small profit (75%) on the sale of each CD. It is anticipated to update the CD on an annual or biannual basis and make it available to existing purchasers at a reduced rate of £5.

Who can take part?
Any Individual, Institution, Group/Society can take part in the project. Only those supplying information can sell the CD's. All contributors to this project will appear in the credits on the publication.I'm sure everyone will agree that this is going to be a very worthwhile project and an invaluable research tool.
